Cord Blood

The umbilical cord is a very rich source of stem cells.  It is usually discarded when a foal is born.  Human cord blood stem cells have been collected and used for over thirty years as part of the treatment of life threatening diseases. Technology has now advanced to a stage where equine cord blood stem cells can be affordably collected and stored as a prospective “insurance policy” in case of future injury or disease.

Stud farms aim to provide their owners and clients with a high quality service using the best available equipment, staff and technologies.  Over recent years veterinary science and new technologies have enabled studs to provide both a highly practical and a highly technical standard of care to mares and foals.  The collection of umbilical cord blood from a foal provides suitably advanced studs with the opportunity to offer a relatively straightforward additional service to their clients.  It also shows the stud to have strong technical skills and an innovative forward looking approach.

Owners and breeders clearly have a long term business, and often personal, interest in the health and fitness of the horses that they have bred.  Cord blood storage provides the industry with something that may help to protect the horse’s long term health, welfare and career; this can be achieved with minimal disruption and at a low cost.
