VetCell BioScience is a leading provider of stem cell technology to the world of animal health. The company investigates, develops and commercialises stem cell technologies for veterinary use. Future services and products will be targeted at the highly commercial pet sector but VetCell’s pioneering services are aimed at the performance horse.

The British Horse Industry’s gross output is approximately £3.4 billion, America’s Horse Industry contributes roughly $112 billion to the GDP and the Australian Horse Industry contributes about Aus$ 6.3 billion. Around the world the management and care of horses is big business.

Injury to a tendon or ligament remains the major cause of premature retirement in performance horses and traditional therapies result in a scarred tendon and a consequent reduction in tendon efficiency plus a high risk of re-injury. Stem cells, for the first time,

offer the prospect of a return to a fully functional tendon.

Whilst many stem cell therapies languish in the early stages of development, VetCell has rapidly commercialised a technique for the multiplication of equine stem cells. These cells are being used in the treatment of tendon and ligament injuries throughout Europe, Japan, Australia and New Zealand.

VetCell is developing a portfolio of services and products that will increase the range of species and conditions treated with stem cells. This will provide Veterinary Surgeons with a new therapeutic arsenal, thus improving the health and welfare of the animals that provide their owners with so much pleasure.
